Many were Unprepared - 5 Year Anniversary of Storm Alfred

WEST SUFFIELD  October 28 -  Tomorrow is 5 years since the rare "white Halloween" of Storm Alfred or commonly referred to as Snowtober.  Which left 3.2 Million residents and businesses in 12 U.S states and 3 Canadian provinces with power outages that lasted as long as 11 days and ended with the resignation of the chief operating officer of Connecticut Light & Power.

“Snow on the ground with leaves on the trees just doesn't look right” says Anna Sogliuzzo. Trees were still in leaf and as the heavy snowfall added extra weight to them. Trees which days before enjoyed warm rainy weather uprooted, snapped, and wreaked havoc, creating storm damage that ranged between $1 - $3 billion.  11 Deaths were blamed on the storm and states of emergency was declared in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and parts of New York.

One grocery store which had a generator became a lifeline to many residents who loaded up on supplies, charged cell phones and hear badly needed, daily updates over the intercom.

Kerry McNiven said she was "totally unprepared" for the storm that knocked out her water, power and sent tree limbs crashing into her Simsbury, Conn., home.
